Fire that Marketing Person!

November 15th, 2010 at 05:15 pm

A tale of marketing gone awry...

Some years ago I learned to bind books by hand, a low tech discipline that appeals to my environmental ethic which also keeps a bit of the past alive.

After making fairly nice journals for awhile, with semi-hard cloth covered front and backs, I switched gears and produced a dozen fun 'recycled box' books.

Example - Wheaties Journal

Example - Wheat Thins Journal

The covers catch attention, folks know the brands of course. I posted some pictures around the internet, and some of my posts appeared on Twitter.

Well, seems the Wheat Thins people are on Twitter and saw my post. They emailed me directly and offered to send a free box of Wheat Thins as 'Thanks'.

Hmmm, ok, I judged the offer safe and without spam. And about a week later I received a box of them in the mail.

My take No. 1: Why did they market to me, a long time convert already?

My take No. 2: The postage for sending the free box was $9.95! omgosh, that's crazy.

Ah well, the biz graduates need to figure this one out.

Yikes, insane!! Sure was nice of them though. Smile
DH would be all over that Wheaties Fuel book - if you had used a different Wheaties Fuel box. Seriously, there was a good deal on those (free) several months back and he would only let me get the ones with Peyton Manning. *sigh*

I'd say they are buying your future business...they want you to keep making those books with their product.

We just happened to get the above shown Wheaties, I'm sure I used a coupon. Being so not on top of current sports, I don't even know who this guy is (bball player I think it says on the back).

You couldn't have paid me to recognize the faces on those boxes! They just looked like big scary faces to me. I just grabbed a couple of boxes and DH flipped out on me in the store - telling me I got the wrong ones. Huh... who knew? Smile

The Wheat Thins people love it because you're not only advertising their product at no cost to them, you're saying you use it by using their box. $9.95 probably seems like a bargain for them for free advertising, and they sent you the box so that you tell everyone else how great the company and product is. I'm in an advertising class this semester, can't you tell? LOL

Wow... free Wheat Thins (that cost the company ten bucks to send)? It seems that you are doing something right. The only thing that would lead to a better result is if they sent you some Triscuits... I'm a fan. =) I need to learn how to bind some Triscuit books and see if it will give me any insurance of free crackers down the line...
