DH gave me ideas of gifts for him :D but need a little advice

November 14th, 2008 at 03:19 pm

My hubby is a kid at heart, very positive and open minded. Not to mention happily receives birthday and Christmas gifts.

Every so often I splurge on him (like the year he got a fishing trip to Alaska, ok he already had airfare from frequent flier miles, all I added was the room and the guide). Or the year he got an electric guitar (and he remarked, 'if it wasn't for you I wouldn't get any big gifts anymore in my life').

But most years I keep things practical, it's my nature. And this year he was going to get socks!

Except he gave me some ideas:
- a couple area rugs for our new weekend house. I like this idea cause I was going to get something anyway, and now I have authority to go pick them out myself Smile

- a stereo system which the TV can eventually be plugged into.

OK folks, that one is the question. It's been 20+ years since I bought stereo components -- flash back to college when the more watts the BETTER. I still have that system Yamaha amp, tape decks, turntable, and all.

But I assume people don't do this anymore!

So need: A compact system, not really a portable boombox type thing, w/
-receiver
-speakers
-CD/DVD player

I guess I will go to Best Buy? (although Circuit City is closing but then nix on the exchanges or returns if I do it wrong).

Someone educate me in the 21st century!

I'm sorry that I can't be of any help to you with electronics (I am the one that cannot get the pics from my digital camera uploaded onto my laptop).

Check out Walmart or Sam's Club/Costco. You might be able to get a good deal on electronics at either of those places, though a knowledgeable employee might be questionable.

If it fails, hit the rug dept too! Have a good day!

If you have all your music stored on an ipod or mp3, you could just buy a speaker system. They are pretty portable, I don't know about the TV piece.

Does DH have a buddy who you could ask. With my DH he tells his buddy what the latest du-dad that he wants is. You might be able to get a better idea of what he has in mind if you ask more questions.

If you ask his buddy you will not be giving anything away.

NEED to be able to plug the TV in to this system (cause the TV we have there is MIL's hand me down with speakers SHOT), so Ipod stuff is out.

We don't belong to CostCo/Sams anymore!

(and haha momsense on the digital camera processes)

Maybe I will do a craigslist search...at least to get ideas.

The component system you speak of may require more than just one entry response from us. For example, I need to know exactly what kind of TV it is, and what kind of audio output it has.

It would also help to get an idea of the size of your room (how much sound you want), and most important to us of all, how much is your budget for all this?

Also, what other audio systems are you interested in plugging this into? CD player? iPod? Would a slightly cheaper all-in-one system suffice, or would you be willing to spend a little more on modularity and scalability?

There are plenty of good choices out there. It's almost dizzying really. But again, it just depends on what you're looking for, and what you are willing to settle for.

    Thx BA-
This is a weekend home, thus moderately light use will occur. I do not know the TV brand off the top of my head. It is probably Zenith, Sony, or some major brand, and is larger than 27".

Budget minded system (all in one) would probably fit the bill for a good number of years.

Foresee? CD/DVD, maybe Wii. We are not an iPod family but my kids are 8 and 10, maybe they will grow into that?

Can I do this for under $200?

Oh ok! Well, $200 is kind of on the low side. (I know, it should be plenty. Don't I sound like one of those spendy hubbys that people complain about?) But fortunately, your needs isn't very high either, so this should be doable.

Text is How about these two systems? and Link is http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=cat13504&type=page&pageIdentity=searchDriven&useProductString=true&productString=1206749659170*1200702389126&unProductString=1205538061760*1207352155889&catId=
    How about these two systems?
Both should do the trick. The Samsung may be priced slightly higher, but you might be able to find one somewhere that will sell it within your budget.

So far the 1000 watt system looks like it will meet needs. Might wait a bit and see what crazy discounts come along (just yesterday BB reported their sales are in the toilet).

and ps to SA Admin ~ thx for removing the spam hereon
