Feel the Pain? Scientific study says you are frugal!

HaHa! I knew it had to be fate! Frugal lifestyle is partly genetic according to a university study by a marketing professor who conducted brain imaging to reveal that frugal people quite literally "feel" the pain of spending in a way that other people do not.

(A marketing expert? Of course! Maybe sponsored, maybe purely out of interest!)

Miller-Mccune Magazine, a very refreshing news source that I find balanced and fact based instead of short-attention-span and dumbed-down as much of other available media exhibits. They proport to use "current academic research with real-time reporting to address pressing social concerns". How did your parents behave with $? Don't forget the article says marketing professor "Rick believes frugal behavior is not entirely a genetic predisposition but also may reflect early environmental influences such as parental spending habits".

    Interesting.

Our families have money saving personalities, but also were greatly influenced by the depression, etc. I'd assume a little of both. Other personality types probably reacted differently to the depression and hard times.

Is this why I completely disconnect with people when they try to tell me spending money is essential to happiness??? Big Grin Seriously though. Some conversations in the blogs and thread - I just don't relate at all. This study probably explains the vast psychological gap between someone who finds pleasure in spending and someone who feels pain!

My mother currently is (and probably always has been) a financial DISASTER! My dad doesn't really stand out in either direction with money. I don't think he has much though. He never was very successful with money. My mother just wants to "have fun" and doesn't care to be responsible. I make sure her bills are paid each month (with her money). I became frugal on my own somehow, and later on learned what a disaster she is financially. I grew up thinking she didn't make enough money. She really doesn't, but she sure isn't frugal with it at all.

My parents were terrible with money until about the past 7-10 years or so. Actually, they are still not exactly razor sharp with it, but their new mindset leads them to have a budget and stick to it, which is more than I can say for most people I know! I was horrible with money too, until about a decade ago, and I'm still in school so I have precious little to manage at the moment. Still, I appreciate the knowledge that I have now, so that I have some insurance of being able to manage income when I have it. Really interesting study, there, thanks for posting it!
